SOUTHERN UTAH – Troops currently deployed with the Utah National Guard 2nd Battalion 2-22nd Field Artillery Unit are still unsure whether they are coming home months earlier than planned.

As media outlets report that the Iraqi government has still not asked U.S. forces to stay beyond the Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline, Southern Utahans are wondering whether members of the 222 and 213th will be returning home before the new year. The troops were originally told to be prepared for an 8 to 12-month deployment. (See story here)

Major Bruce Roberts said the 222 and 213th are waiting for further guidance from the National Guard.

“This is very recently breaking news for us,” Roberts said. “We are waiting to see how this will affect our troops.”

When asked whether the 222 was planning to pack up and come home, Roberts said: “Not that we know of yet.”
