St. George Ironman No. 751, a man on a mission

ST. GEORGE – As the St. George Ironman is set to start on Saturday many of you may be wondering, “Who should I root for?”

There is only one athlete that is competing in order to raise funds for the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation and, just as important, to honor and remember those who have lost their lives as a result of 9/11

His name is Robert Verhelst, and will be sporting No. 751 this weekend.

What makes Verhelst so special, besides the fact that he is raising funds and awareness for those two “kick-ass” reasons, Verhelst takes the normal approach to the swim and bike portions of the Ironman but then, when all the other athletes are putting on shorts and tank tops to run the 26.2 miles, Verhelst will be putting on full firefighter gear, including air tank and helmet. Yes, full firefighter gear – about 100 lbs of it, according to Fire Department Network News website – and then he will run 26.2 miles

This is how Verhelst makes his point about remembering those who have lost their lives as a result of 9/11.

Verhelst is also on a World Record Attempt by completing 27 Ironman triathlon events in 2012. St. George will be his sixth this year.

You can join his mission by cheering him on, No. 751, tomorrow.

You can also express your support for by contributing to Verhelst’s cause at his own Code 3 for a Cure website.

Remember, it’s: Robert Verhelst No. 751.
