HURRICANE – The Hurricane Valley Fire District and Hurricane Police Department responded to a report of a ruptured natural gas line at Hurricane High School at 11:30 a.m. today.
The line, located at 345 West 100 South, was struck by an excavation team working on the school addition. The rupture allowed natural gas to flow unrestricted from an estimated three-inch pipe.
An engine, ladder and ambulance plus five patrol officers arrived on scene, assessed the situation and requested that the school and several surrounding buildings be evacuated as a precaution. Students were evacuated to the school’s football field and access to the area was denied. Firefighters and police officers remained on scene until 1:50 p.m. controlling access, removing ignition sources and providing protective measures as Questar Gas worked to stop the flow.
Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day and bus transportation arranged to take students home.
No injuries were reported. Classes are expected to continue as normal Wednesday.
