KAYSVILLE – The Dixie Rebels traveled north to take on the Great Falls Gladiators in a match-up between the Rocky Mountain Football League’s best and worst teams. There were no surprises as the Rebels gave the Gladiators a 61-0 whupping.
The Gladiators have yet to score a point this season in six games and have yielded over 40 points per game to their opponents.
“We truly did not try to run up the score,” said Dixie head coach Dale Stott. “We had a couple of pick-sixes when they went for it on fourth down deep in their own territory.”
The Rebels got several opportunities for players who have had lesser roles this season. Sione Tapuosi, who led the league in rushing last year but has taken a back seat to Misi Tupe and Rimo Mapu this year, got 126 yards on 12 carries. Prentiss Miller rushed 96 yards on six carries.
“We used this game as an opportunity to try some different sets,” said Stott. “We also looked at some newly acquired players and used others in new roles. We put Miller in a flex and he was able to get big yardage on some reverses.”
Tupe scored the first touchdown culminating an 86-yard drive with a two yard plunge. The Rebels added a safety and a 20-yard field goal from kicker Eric Brooksby to round out the first-quarter scoring, 12-0.
The Rebels tacked on two more touchdowns in the second. The first was a TD reception by Brennan Adams. The second came on an 11-yard run by Tapuosi.
After halftime, Adams and Tapuosi scored again in the third quarter and the Rebels led 40-0 going into the fourth.
Lelei Angilau, a recent returned missionary who joined the team this past week, returned an interception for a touchdown in his first game. Andrew Misa had the other pick-six, both interceptions coming in the fourth quarter, bookending an Alec Mecham to Prentiss Miller touchdown.
The Rebels outgained the Gladiators 435-95 in total offense. Great Falls could only muster 16 yards rushing.
The Rebels move to 6-0 while Great Falls remains winless at 0-6. Both teams will resume action May 31 after taking the Memorial Day holiday off next week. The Rebels will host division foe Utah Cobras. The Gladiators will host the Loco Express.
