UPDATE: At 5:35 a.m. Wednesday, Rocky Mountain Power posts that power has been restored in the Brian Head area.
SOUTHERN UTAH – Power outages continue in Southern Utah Tuesday night due to impact from heavy winds.
“It’s been a really bad storm,” Paul Murphy, a spokesperson for Rocky Mountain Power, said. “We’ve called in extra crews and we’ll be working thought the night to try and get everything restored.”
As of 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, 3,382 customers remained without power in the areas of Cedar City and Richfield, Murphy said; statewide, 17,364 customers are without power.
Among the affected areas, residents of Parowan and Paragonah reported their power was still out as of 11 p.m.
“In the Brian Head area, there’s 1,806 customers out,” Murphy said.
Rocky Mountain Power workers are focusing on the areas of the state that have the most affected customers and are trying to get to other areas as fast as possible, he said.
“There have been so many outages that it’s been impossible to even provide an estimated time of restoration,” Murphy said.
“It’s knocked down power lines, poles, caused pole fires, knocked down transformers – it’s just been a really, really vicious storm,” he added.
Murphy encouraged people to be prepared for power outages by having items on hand like flashlights, battery-operated alarm clocks and radios, manual can openers, bottled water and first-aid kits.
Any Rocky Mountain Power customers who are currently without power are encouraged to call Rocky Mountain Power at 877-508-5088.
Public service reminder: It is important to always call 811, which reaches an underground utility locating service that is local to you, prior to starting a project that involves digging – whether you are a contractor using heavy equipment or a homeowner putting in a new fence – Blue Stakes of Utah, or the applicable locator company, will mark underground utility lines for free in order to prevent accidents and ensure people stay safe.
