PAROWAN GAP – The public is invited to attend the annual Summer Solstice Sunset Observation Program at Parowan Gap, 13 miles northwest of Parowan, Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“Kids attending the program will be able to create a sun dial at the beginning of the program,” Parowan Heritage Foundation secretary Nancy Dalton said.
After the sunset, the kids can see how much time elapsed from the beginning of the program by the movement of the shadow across their sun dial.
Nal Morris, solar engineer, will be the guest speaker. He will explain how the “zipper glyph” works, as well as the lunar glyph.
At 8:30 p.m. those in attendance will walk to the sunset cairns to watch the sun set down the middle of the Gap as depicted on the “zipper glyph.”
Those attending the free event need to bring chairs to sit in and plenty of water to drink. Also, those attending the event, especially those with children, need to watch for rattlesnakes, as a couple have been spotted around the petroglyphs this past week.
