Husband, wife arrested, 3 kids taken by DCFS following police chase

HURRICANE – A husband and wife were arrested early Saturday morning, and their children were taken into state custody, after the husband led an officer on a high-speed vehicle chase and then fled on foot near Coral Canyon in Hurricane.

At approximately 1 a.m. Saturday, a Hurricane City Police officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Suburban for revoked registration, according to a press release from the Hurricane City Police Department.

The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over at the Texaco gas station on Coral Canyon Boulevard, on the Hurricane side of State Street.

The driver of the Suburban, a man, fled from the officer at a high rate of speed toward the Holiday Inn Express in Coral Canyon, which is on the Washington City side of State Street. He then abandoned the vehicle and fled north from the area on foot.

The officer found a woman and three children in the Suburban.

Responders from the Hurricane City Police Department, the Washington City Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office assisted in searching for the man.

“Officers were able to identify the driver as Jason N. Williams and found that he had multiple felony warrants for his arrest,” the press release said. “Officers had prior knowledge that Jason had warrants, one of them being from Lincoln County, Nevada for $20,000 cash.”

After about an hour, officers located Williams on Foothills Canyon Drive in Hurricane and arrested him.

Williams, 37, who is listed as a resident of Pioche, Nevada, was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of evading police, a third-degree felony; sex offender registry violation, a third-degree felony; reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor; driving on revoked registration, a class C misdemeanor; no insurance, a class C misdemeanor; speeding, a class C misdemeanor; driving on an expired license, an infraction; and four third-degree felony warrants.

The sex offender violation relates to Williams driving a vehicle that he had not disclosed as part of his sex offender registration requirements, according to the press release.

According to court documents, Williams’ sex offender registration stems from a 2006 conviction for unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The woman in the vehicle was identified as Crystal Darleen Hurst Williams, of St. George. She was also arrested and booked into Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of endangering a child, a third-degree felony; possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor; and a third-degree felony warrant.

Because both parents were arrested, the children in the vehicle were picked up by the Department of Child and Family Services, according to the press release.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
