Rooftop fire causes restaurant evacuation

WASHINGTON CITY – Fire crews responded to a report of a rooftop fire Monday afternoon at the Burger King fast food restaurant on Red Cliffs Drive in Washington.

Around 2:45 p.m., someone across the street from the restaurant saw smoke and flames coming from the roof of the Burger King and called 911, Washington City Fire Chief Brent Hafen said.

At the time, some air conditioning technicians were replacing a condensing unit inside an HVAC unit, Hafen said. They were doing some cutting on the roof and it is believed that sparks caused by the activity, caught a portion of the roof on fire, he said.

“It got a spark and burned down to the roof and that started the roof deck on fire,” Hafen said.

The fire burned through the single-ply membrane on the roof and started to get into the insulation and some electrical wiring.

At that time, the technician on the roof, who had been working inside the HVAC unit, noticed the fire and began applying water from a rooftop hose.

He managed to put out the fire before fire crews arrived, Hafen said.

As that was happening, Burger King employees and customers evacuated the restaurant as a precautionary measure.

Despite the scare and some damage to the rooftop along with some water damage, Hafen said, there was no major structural damage and no smoke entered the building. Still, firefighters ascended to the roof to make sure the fire hadn’t gotten into the building.

Employees were allowed back into the building once it was determined the fire was completely out and hadn’t spread inside.

No injuries were reported in connection with fire.

With a little electrical work and roofing repairs, Hafen said, the Washington Burger King should be back in business with little downtime.

Washington City Police and Gold Cross Ambulance also responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
