ST. GEORGE – A two-car collision occurred at the northern end of Bluff Street in St. George Saturday night when a teenage driver unsuccessfully attempted to make a U-turn.
Around 8:30 p.m., a pickup truck was traveling northbound on Bluff Street, just north of the Red Hills Parkway interchange. The driver, a 17-year-old female, had intended to turn onto Red Hills Parkway but missed the turn and continued heading north, St. George Police Lt. Thad Feltner said.
After taking the flyover, the pickup’s driver attempted to go into a U-turn. She told police she had checked the truck’s blind spot before attempting the turn, Feltner said.
The truck was in the outside lane at the time. When it started to move into the inside northbound lane for the turn, it struck an SUV in that lane, causing damage to the front-passenger side of the vehicle.
Both vehicles were able to pull off the roadway without incident, though the SUV had to be towed from the scene afterward.
The SUV was carrying five passengers: a wife and husband and their three children. Occupants of the pickup included the 17-year-old driver and three passengers: a 16-year-old male and two 15-year-old females. None of the passengers or drivers in either vehicle were seriously hurt.
There were minor injuries reported, Feltner said, but none that required ambulance transport to Dixie Regional Medical Center.
The 17-year-old driver of the pickup was cited for an improper turn.
St. George Police, St. George Fire, Gold Cross Ambulance and Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

My son’s girlfriend and her mother were both kill in a similar accident caused by a driver making an unsafe u turn on a undivided highway. People need to realize the consequences of selfish driving habits, this could have been alot more tragic.
This interchange is poorly designed and everyone I know, myself included, has done this at least once. Out-of-towners especially get lost on the flyover. The State should at least make a u-turn lane to go with their poor design.
Yep, poorly designed intersection.. basically a failure by some overpaid goof. We should all write the governor. i’m sure he cares…
It’s not the spot to make a U Turn LOL.! that’s for sure.
