IRON COUNTY – Authorities released dashcam footage Monday showing a driver, who was allegedly distracted by her cellphone, roll her vehicle after nearly hitting a Utah Highway Patrol trooper parked alongside Interstate 15 Sunday evening. The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
UHP Trooper Bambi Baie was wrapping up a routine traffic stop on northbound I-15, near milepost 72 in Parowan around 5 p.m., when a woman, traveling north in a Ford Expedition, veered off the right shoulder of the road, missing Baie by just a few feet.
The driver, a 55-year-old woman from Cedar City, looked up just in time to see the trooper on the side of the road, according to a UHP media statement issued Sunday evening. She swerved to the left, narrowly missing the trooper’s car, then overcorrected to the right.
The vehicle then went off the right side of I-15 and rolled several times, as shown on the dashcam video.
Emergency responders extricated the woman from the SUV. She was transported in serious condition to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City. From there, she was airlifted by Life Flight to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George with serious but nonlife-threating injuries, according to UHP.
The woman had been distracted by her cellphone, causing her to drift from her lane of travel, the media statement said.

best thing to do is raise the speed limit to 90. it’s safer
Agreed. If we raised the speed limit and then patrolled more for faulty tail lights that would definitely reduce the fatalities on Utah roads.
raise speed to 95 and do worthiness checkpoints to make sure all drivers are worthy and have a recommend = no more wrecks ever. amen
