TAYLORSVILLE – The two remaining Region 9 teams were eliminated Friday from the 3A State softball tournament at the Valley Complex in Salt Lke County. They both fell to the same team, the Lady Buffaloes of Tooele. Snow Canyon lost early in the first game of the day. Cedar advanced all the way to the semifinal of the one-loss bracket before succumbing to the Region 10 squad. Below are the game summaries:
Tooele 12, Snow Canyon 7
The offensive power from the Lady Buffaloes proved too much for Snow Canyon. Tooele had reached double figures in three of its tournament games and has an average run production of 9.4 in its five wins. Snow Canyon hit better than they did previously from the plate, but could not match Tooele’s production. The Lady Warriors finished the year 17-5-1.
Cedar City 13, Logan 0 (six innings)
The Lady Reds poured it on Logan in their first game of the day. Bryton Holyoak pitched the complete-game shutout. Reagan Urquidez and Sage Oldroyd both hit home runs. Dream Weaver and Hannah Williams both hit doubles.
The Lady Grizzlies entered the postseason with an 8-14 record but then surprised many with a first-round win over Desert Hills and then later eliminated Canyon View. Logan ends the year with a 10-16 record.
Cedar City 10, Stansbury 3
Holyoak continued her dominant pitching against Stansbury. “We played them earlier in the year,” said Cedar head coach Chris Weaver. “They beat us but they did not face Bryton in the earlier game. We felt we might face them in the postseason, so that was one of the few games that Holyoak did not pitch during the year.”
Cedar continued its dominant hitting at the plate. Williams had a home run. Dream Weaver had two doubles. Oldroyd also had a double. The Lady Stallions came into the postseason ranked fourth in the state. Their season ended at 21-10.
Tooele 10, Cedar City 2
“Pitching three games in one day proved to be too much for Bryton,” said Coach Weaver. “She still pitched well but there were a few balls that drifted up in the zone and Tooele took advantage.”
One-loss teams have to play more games when fighting back through the elimination bracket. Cedar’s three games Friday were back-to-back-to-back with little break between games. “I feel good in how well we played,” said Coach Weaver. “Tooele is a good team from a very tough region (Region 10). But making it to the final four teams in the state is a good accomplishment.”
Dream Weaver had a home run in the game. Cedar finished the year 19-11. Tooele will face Juab next. The winner of that game will have to beat Bear River twice to capture the state title. The Lady Bears emerged from the winners’ bracket unscathed.
