SANTA CLARA — A head on collision between two vehicles on U.S. Highway 91 sent one man to the hospital Friday morning.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., emergency responders received a report of a head-on collision between a Ford SUV and a delivery truck, Washington County Sheriff’s Detective Nate Abbott said.
The driver of the Ford, an adult male, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 91 between mileposts 12 and 13 and became distracted, possibly while reaching for his cell phone.
Meanwhile, a commercial box-type delivery truck, also driven by an adult male, was traveling south on U.S. 91. The driver of the Ford swerved across the center lane and collided head-on with the box truck.
The driver of the Ford was transported by Ivins EMS to Dixie Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, Abbott said. He was also cited for improper lane travel.
Traffic was reduced to a single (northbound) lane for approximately one hour, with traffic controls placed at the top and bottom of the hill where the accident occurred.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Utah Highway Patrol and Santa Clara-Ivins Police and Fire Departments also responded.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.

I’m really surprised there are not more accidents on this road. Now that Ivins City has approved an RV resort on Hwy 91, that should add to the potential for accidents given the size of the vehicles and the bicycles that use that roadway. RVers will likely decide to drive 91 to I-15 rather than going all the way through town to the interstate. Add to that the new Ivins reservoir attraction (Fire Lake) for more traffic and you’re getting things very nicely set up for more accidents with all the hills on that road where one can’t see whose coming or how quickly.
I didn,t know there was cell phone reception on rte 91 in that area…I take the road all the time,, only time trucks come thru is to avoid inspection. Or delivery from gunlock ?? Or reservations?.. Anyway be careful, Don,t teach for anything on that road..
