VEYO – A truck caught fire near Veyo Tuesday evening and also started a small brush fire.
Around 5:50 p.m., a flatbed work truck that had turned onto the road leading to the Veyo Pool just off state Route 18 caught fire for unknown reasons, Central Fire Chief LuAnn Carpenter said.
The truck had come to a stop on the south side of the road, yet flames from the blaze, possibly carried by winds in the area, apparently jumped the road.
This started a small brush fire on the north side of the road that traveled an estimated one quarter of a mile along the road before being extinguished by responding firefighters, Carpenter said.
While the engine compartment and cab were completely consumed by the fire, the driver escaped unharmed.
Fire units and personnel from Central, Veyo and Brookside responded to the fire. Medics from Dammeron Valley also responded, as did Washington County Sheriff’s deputies.
The vehicle and brush fire were out by 6:30 p.m.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

The loss of a vehicle is devastating enough I’m just glad no one was hurt. The vehicle can always be replaced and the driver was able to go home to the family and loved ones. that’s what is important. Praise the Lord @
In our high heat , low humidity climate , vehicle hoses & belts are subject to extra wear & early failure .
It is wise to check them in the spring and again after the hot summer .
Replacing bad hoses , belts & keeping fluid levels up is wayyyyy cheaper than replacing a vehicle .
