CEDAR CITY — The Ceramic Guild for the Southern Utah University Department of Art and Design is hosting its annual fundraising “Chili Bowl Sale” Wednesday through Friday. Over 270 handcrafted ceramic bowls will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the university’s Sharwan Smith Living Room.
In addition to student work, Susan Harris, acclaimed ceramic artist and professor of art at Southern Utah University, will be donating a few bowls to the sale as well. All proceeds from the sale support the university’s Ceramic Guild members’ efforts to attend the annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference.
Last year’s Chili Bowl Sale allowed five students to attend the conference, where the students were enriched with educational experiences and were able to connect with graduate school representatives. Jurors were also on hand to critique the students’ portfolios, allowing them to receive additional feedback on their works of art. Multiple art gallery visits were also included in their conference trip.
“Last year, we spent hours walking around the various galleries in the area,” said Seth York, Southern Utah University public administration masters candidate and Ceramics Guild president. “Going to the student exhibits allowed us to see what other artists are creating. I enjoy the galleries the most because you get so much inspiration.”
The Ceramic Guild has ten students attending the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference this year, so they are working hard to ensure this year’s Chili Bowl Sale is a big success. All sales events hosted by the Ceramic Guild fund educational opportunities for its members and allow visiting artists to come to the university to teach new techniques.
Chili comes free with the purchase of a ceramic bowl. Every ceramic bowl is microwave and dishwasher safe, so buyers may choose to eat the chili from their new bowl on the spot or from a disposable container provided by the Ceramic Guild. With prices ranging from $10-$25, it is an affordable way to obtain handcrafted art and feed the appetite at the same time.
