ST. GEORGE — A 17-year-old boy crashed his vehicle into a school bus for special needs children Friday morning after he reportedly became distracted by another vehicle.

Just after 8 a.m., officers responded to South Bloomington Hills Drive and Chokeberry Drive on a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a red 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan and a 2014 Freight Chassis school bus, St. George Police Officer Lona Trombley said.

A 58-year-old woman driving the bus told police she was slowing for traffic that had backed up at a stop sign at Brigham Road and Bloomington Hills Drive when the collision occurred.

“The 17-year-old male driver of the minivan said he was traveling southbound on Bloomington Hills Drive when he observed another vehicle (not involved) turn onto Chokeberry Drive,” Trombley said. “He said he was watching to see what that vehicle was doing and did not realize that the bus was slowing down in traffic.”

The 17-year-old driver told police that he believed he was traveling at a low rate of speed when he crashed into the back of the bus.

There were six students traveling inside the bus when the collision occurred, Trombley said. However, no injuries were reported, she said.

As a result of the crash, Trombley said the Honda minivan sustained moderate front-end damage while the school bus sustained minor paint scuffs on the rear bumper.

The 17-year-old driver was issued a citation for following too close, Trombley said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
