CEDAR CITY – The Department of Music at Southern Utah University brings “The Great American Songbook Series” of concerts Dec. 6 featuring the music of Irving Berlin, a fitting offering for the Christmas season.
Irving Berlin composed more than 1,500 songs and dozens of musicals and films. During the 1942 Holiday Inn showcase, Bing Crosby sang “White Christmas,” which would become a best-selling holiday favorite. Other works of Berlin include “Cheek to Cheek,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “What’ll I Do” and music from “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Jordan Sanders, a senior voice performance major from Castle Dale, said: “I don’t often get to sing in this musical style because I usually sing classical music. The jazzy style of this music is a joy to sing.”
Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students, or $25 for a season ticket to all four concerts in the series, this is the second concert in the series. Concerts are held at the Southern Utah Museum of Art at 7:30 p.m. with performances by both students and faculty members.
Proceeds of the songbook series concerts benefit students with instrument needs, tour costs and the like.
The Great American Songbook Series will continue with two more concerts Feb. 7, 2017, with composer Cole Porter, and March 21, 2017, with composers Rodgers and Hart.

The College’s affiliate organizations include the Southern Utah Museum of Art, Utah Shakespeare Festival and SUU’s Ballroom Dance Company.
