HURRICANE — A three-vehicle collision triggers a second crash involving two more vehicles in a busy Hurricane intersection Saturday.
At approximately 5 p.m. officers were dispatched to a three-car collision at the intersection of state Route 9 and 3400 West involving a white 1994 Mazda pickup truck, a red 2004 Toyota Rav4, and a black 2011 Honda Pilot, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
When emergency personnel arrived on scene the 32-year-old woman driving the Honda reported minor injuries but declined transport to the hospital.
The parties from the other two vehicles reported no injuries, Buell said.
A preliminary investigation showed the Toyota and the Honda were both stopped side by side at the light at 3400 West while the 68-year-old man driving the Mazda, also heading west, was approaching the intersection.
The man told officers that he did not see the red light, nor was he aware the Toyota and Honda were stopped, Buell said. Once he realized the situation he attempted to drive in between both vehicles while he applied the brakes to avoid the impending crash but instead, struck both cars from the rear.
The impact sent the Toyota and the Honda out into the intersection, while the Mazda spun out of control.
All three cars sustained extensive damage during the crash, and were towed from the scene.
The man driving the Mazda received a citation for failing to stop at a red light.
While responders were busy tending to the first crash, a second crash occurred at 5:40 p.m. involving a 1990 red Jeep Cherokee driven by a 22-year-old man and a Black Dodge Caravan, Buell said.
The 36-year-old woman driving the Dodge had two minor passengers; a nine-year-old girl and an 18-month-old child. The officer said no serious injuries were reported.
All occupants were wearing seat belts, and the 18-month-old toddler was properly secured in a child car seat, he said.
The driver of the Dodge, while heading west on SR-9, slowed to a stop as directed by police when her vehicle was struck from behind by the jeep.
The impact sent both cars into the intersection where emergency responders were still dealing with the first crash.
Both vehicles remained operational and were driven from the scene.
The man driving the Jeep was subsequently cited for following too close, the officer said.
Traffic was affected for more than an hour, Buell said, as traffic in both directions was confined to a single lane to allow emergency responders to tend to the large crash scene.
The Hurricane Police Department, Hurricane Valley Fire District, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, LaVerkin Police, Utah State Parks, and an officer from the Bureau of Land Management responded and assisted with the large scene.

What is wrong with people. Not paying attention, and trying to go between 2 vehicles is crazy..
Maybe he forgot that he was in a car, instead of on a motorcycle?
I’m bored with the car accidents. I should say, i likiked meth but won’t do meth again because its evil……just like same sex marriage and same sex sex is. But yours is legal…….hmmmmmm enjoy your rights against God. I know I did for a long time but woke up one day and BAM! GOD said, no more! And I was like what? Oh crap that’s God! I never touched the stuff again cuz I don’t want to find out what happens if I do…..gay sex is no different.
I’m willing to bet that the reason the driver of the Mazda pick and the driver of the jeep were not paying attention of what was ahead of them, is because they were using their mobile phones, ie texting, which probably is the real cause of the crash and about four times the fine. Maybe it’s time that the police start getting search warrants for the drivers phones and get the the real source of the crashes.
