ST. GEORGE — Three cars smashed into each other Thursday after one of the drivers attempted to swerve around some vehicles that were stopped in a road in St. George.
The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on E. Red Hills Parkway, St. George Police officer Andy Mickelson said. Two eastbound vehicles were stopped and waiting to turn left onto E. Middleton Drive when the driver of a Honda Ridgeline, also eastbound, was unable to stop in time before the reaching the two other vehicles. So he slammed on his brakes instead and swerved into oncoming traffic, Mickelson said.
A Mini Cooper coming from the other direction swerved to avoid hitting the Ridgeline driving down the wrong side of the road, which caused the collision between the Mini Cooper, the Ridgeline and a separate GMC Canyon that was also traveling westbound, Mickelson said.
“It was kind of a mess,” he said.
There were no serious injuries, but the airbags may have caused some burns to the driver in the Mini Cooper, Mickelson said. A citation will be issued to the driver of the Ridgeline.
“As to what that citation is, it’s still pending,” Mickelson said.
All three vehicles sustained enough damaged that they needed to be towed from the scene, which blocked all traffic on Red Hills Parkway for about 30 minutes. Police directed drivers on a detour on Middleton Drive to avoid driving on Red Hills Parkway while emergency responders cleaned up the scene.

can we get some reckless driving charges for these idiots swerving into oncoming traffic lately. These folks should be getting their licenses suspended at the very least.

Sounds like the Mini Cooper was the only one who remembered Driver’s Ed…. you swerve RIGHT to avoid a collision, because left puts you into oncoming traffic. If you have to hit someone, it’s better to collide with a car going the same direction as you, so the speed/impact is minimized. No one wins in a head on, unless you start counting lug nuts. The most lug nuts always wins.
