ST. GEORGE — A delivery truck clipped a bicyclist Monday morning, sending him off the road on Red Hills Parkway.

The 48-year-old male cyclist received minor injuries – including a laceration to his chin – and reported experiencing back pain. He was conscious and responsive when officers arrived.

However, the full extent of the rider’s injuries is still unknown, as he was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center, said St. George Police public information officer Lona Trombley.

Both the driver and bicyclist were traveling north on the road when the incident occurred.

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet, which Trombley said she believes prevented further injury.

The driver reported that he was “drowsy” at the time, Trombley said, and was issued a citation for an improper pass.

“It’s nice weather, we do have bicyclists and runners out and we ask that our drivers be aware and pay extra attention,” Trombley said.

The delivery truck clipped the Cyclicst and got a ticket for improper pass. This cop is stupid.
It’s a good thing the bike didn’t have fenders instead of flesh are it would be called a crash. If the truck would have been inches closer it would have been called vehicular homicide.
If you clip a pedestrian with your car is it a improper pass?
The ticket should have been at least assault. The punishment should be harder for distracted drivers when there is a high risk for possible severe injury are death.

There are a couple of riders on Beuna Vista drive and Redhills parkway that will not get out of the way and will
hold traffic up, Its only a matter of time and there will be other accidents.

Bicyclists feel like they own the road. They don’t, and the cyclist was probably at fault as much as the driver.

Regardless of opinions about cyclists, this particular location probably helped cause this incident.
The road is two way with a double yellow and a smaller shoulder east bound. The trees and bushes haven’t been trimmed so it forces bikes to ride on the white shoulder line or thereabouts.
Utah Law states a min of 3ft space to overtake a cyclist. So at this location with traffic both ways, the truck didn’t want to cross double yellow and thought he could brush by the biker as he went by. But that didn’t work.
So his next desperate move was to use the “I’m so tired and drowsy “ excuse.
Not buying it. Just pure carelessness and lack of respect for bikers.

Here’s the truth. On the one side of the road there there is not room for a cyclist to ride w/o impeding traffic. Traffic regularly does 50+mph thru that section. It should flat-out be off limits to cyclists, but I guess the morons that so many of them are will try their luck at it. There was one killed on that stretch not that long ago. Total idiots–too idiotic to even realize they’re doing something suicidal.
