ST. GEORGE — In order to improve the quality of life for young children, experts on childhood development will gather for a training conference this month at Dixie State University.

The 18th annual Early Childhood Collaboration Conference, hosted by Care About Childcare, will take place Friday and Saturday with the theme “A magical world of exploration.”

According to its program, organizers hope the conference will “provide opportunities to establish connections and highlight the resources available in our communities.”

Care About Children is a program funded through the Child Care and Development Fund of the Utah Department of Workforce Services and the Office of Child Care.

Carrie Sigler, director of Care About Childcare @ Five County, said this year’s theme has to do with exploration because that’s how kids learn.

She said her hope for this year’s conference is for participants to leave with a newfound excitement for working with children.

I want participants to leave invigorated and inspired to go back to the children they work with and provide open ended play and new experiences.”

The conference will feature 20 speakers presenting on topics of childhood development, including:

  • Dramatic play.
  • Active learning strategies.
  • Infant and toddler activities.
  • Working with special needs children.
  • Songs and rhymes.
  • Math.
  • Emergency preparedness.
  • Curriculum strategies.

Sigler said 150 people have registered for the conference, and she’s hoping for more to sign up to fill the 300 limit. The registration fee is $55 and includes a family and provider concert Friday from 7-8 p.m. in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Building at Dixie State, as well as all Saturday sessions plus lunch.
