CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — As communities everywhere adjust to a “new normal,” people are spending long hours in front of a screen working, learning and staying connected. Having a healthy relationship with technology is key to successfully navigating today’s world.

“With the pandemic, we’ve spent so much time online, probably more than we ever have in our lives,” said Catherine Larson, director of marketing for InfoWest. “It’s kind of getting to us, and I think a lot of people are experiencing the same thing.”

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is a global movement to promote responsible online behavior and make the internet a better place for all, especially children and young adults. From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, the initiative aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.

The 19th annual Safer Internet Day will be celebrated in more than 200 countries on Feb. 8 with the slogan “together for a better internet.” In the United States, ConnectSafely.org offers programs for parents and schools to encourage positive, productive discussions about online wellness in 2022.

“We live a lot more online now versus just a few years ago, and that gives hackers and thieves more time to target us,” Larson said. “We have to take extra precautions.”

More time spent on digital devices also means more opportunities for kids to be exposed to inappropriate content and potential hazards. InfoWest Connect Plus is an intuitive, user-friendly mobile app that lets subscribers set parental controls and perform basic network monitoring and management anywhere, anytime.

InfoWest Connect Plus functions as both a web filter and content blocker, Larson said. Parents receive alerts when a child’s device tries to engage in any restricted activity. Users can also set screen time limits and quickly turn off their home Wi-Fi network.

InfoWest customers already enjoying the convenience of managed router services can simply download InfoWest Connect Plus to their mobile device, set up a username and password and enter a unique code from their router to begin using the app. Managed routers offer advanced features like gigabit capability for fiber subscribers, dual-band connectivity and Voice over Internet Protocol ports.

Improving productivity at work

InfoWest Connect Plus services are available to everyone – not just InfoWest subscribers – and benefit both home and business networks. Larson said workplaces often struggle to maintain productivity as employees get distracted by the internet, scrolling through Facebook, watching videos on YouTube or even streaming Netflix instead of actually working.

InfoWest Connect Plus helps employers control what content and websites are available on their networks. Users can also monitor their network for connection problems and receive alerts if an unknown device is trying to access it.

“It’s like having your own IT person in your back pocket,” Larson said.
