ST. GEORGE — With soaring house prices and a population boom, buying a home in Washington County has become increasingly difficult. In an effort to help, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah now is accepting applications for their next project, a house to be built in Hurricane.

In a press release issued by Habitat for Humanity, Executive Director Kayo Skandunas said they are looking to fill in the gaps for hard-working people in the community.

“Homeownership opportunities are out of reach for the majority of hard-working income earners in Washington County,” Skandunas said. “Soaring home, construction, and land costs have created a lack of access to housing, and middle to low-income earners are left wondering how they will live and work in Southern Utah. This is a critical time in our community, and Habitat has consistently demonstrated that building affordably is possible – when we build as a community.”

The homeownership application window is open now until Aug. 31, and building begins once a future homeowner is selected. The organization creates homeownership opportunities for community members who demonstrate a need, an ability to repay a 0% interest mortgage and have a willingness to partner with the organization, its community partners and the force of volunteers that come together to make the home build possible.

“Our community members deserve access to safe, decent, affordable housing. We are excited to enter into our 25th year of creating affordable homeownership opportunities, and are thrilled to be building in Hurricane,” Skandunas said.

Those interested can download the application and instructions at this link. Applications are due by Aug. 31.
