Still need to register to vote? Deadline looms for online registration

ST. GEORGE — If you haven’t registered to vote in the midterm elections yet, the deadline is fast approaching.

This Friday at 5 p.m. is when voting registration closes for the current election cycle. While attempting to register by mail is not recommended this close to the deadline, registration can still be completed online or in person at the county clerk’s office.

In-person registration also is available during early voting and on Election Day at designated voting centers.

What follows is a guide to voter registration in Utah.

General requirements for voter registration in Utah

  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be 18 years old on or before the next election.
  • Have lived in Utah for 30 days immediately before the election.
  • Reside within the voting district or precinct in which you register to vote.
  • Not be a convicted felon presently incarcerated for a felony.
  • Not have been convicted of treason or crime against the election franchise (disrupting the right of others to vote in a public election).

Online registration may be the easiest way to go and can be done through the Vote.Utah.gov website.

To be able to register to vote online, you will need a state-issued driver license or identification card with an address that matches where you are registered to vote.

Registration ends by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28.

If you don’t have a matching address on your Utah-issued license, you can still use the online system, but must first change your address listed on your license or state ID to match where you live. This can be done online through the Driver License Division. Once the address is updated online, you can register to vote through the state’s website.

If you do not have a state license or ID, a paper form can be filled out with the needed information and must be turned into the county clerk’s office before the registration window ends. You will need to provide a valid form of ID to the county clerk’s office.

Acceptable forms of identification can be found here.
