Washington County clerk/auditor resigning, special election to follow for replacement

ST. GEORGE — Due to plans involving moving out of the county, Washington County Clerk/Auditor Susan Lewis is resigning.

The announcement was made in a press release sent out Saturday morning by the Washington County Republican Party. Lewis and sent the party notice of her resignation which will take effect May 17.

“I’m resigning and moving to Enoch,” Lewis told St. George News over the phone Saturday.

While she has roots in Hurricane, Lewis added that her father’s side of the family is from Iron County, so “it’s like going home.”

“I love Washington County and its people and the heritage I have here,” Lewis said. “But we’re building a house outside of the county.”

Ryan Sullivan, Lewis’ chief deputy, will be the interim county clerk/auditor until a Republican Party special election. Utah law allows the county party to select a replacement to finish Lewis’ term.

According to the bylaws of the party, a special election to make that selection will be held by the party’s County Central Committee. The special election is set for June 6, 2023.

According the release, Lesa Sandberg ,Washington County Republican Party chair, conveyed her “disappointment at losing Susan, highlighting the exemplary job she has done under very difficult circumstances. The entire Executive Committee of the Washington County Republican Party wishes the very best for Susan and her family during this time of change.”

Washington County Commissioner Victor Iverson also said he was sad to a solid coworker leaving.

“She’s done an outstanding job,” he said. “We wish her well.”

Lewis became Washington County’s Clerk/Auditor in August 2021 after winning a special election triggered by the resignation of former County Clerk/Auditor Kim Hafen. She retained the position after winning the 2022 general election.

Any registered Republican in Washington County can file to run in the upcoming special election.

Potential candidates need to download and fill out the Intent To Run, Disclosure and Delegate List Agreement forms found on the county website, click here for more information.

All three forms need to be emailed to the Washington County Republican Party Secretary, Brandan Morgan. All three documents must be sent received by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, to be considered a candidate.
