ST. GEORGE — A quick response and building codes kept a fire at a fourplex contained to one unit on Tuesday.
St. George Fire Department Chief Robert Stoker said the call for first responders came in at approximately 4:45 p.m. near 2600 East 620 North.
When crews arrived, smoke was billowing from the garage of one of the units, Stoker added. The home’s only occupant, a 20-year-old male, had already noticed and safely exited the house.
“Our crews made an interior attack,” Stoker said. “Front door into the garage and our other crews forced the garage door to ventilate the fire and smoke.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, no injuries were reported by occupants or firefighters. Stoker said the residents will be displaced until the damage can be repaired.
Due to city codes and the installation of firewalls between each of the four units, the fire was contained to the single home.
“The older buildings in St. George don’t have these firewalls,” Stoker said, adding that the incident should serve as a reminder for Southern Utah families to be prepared in the case of a fire, plan evacuation routes and practice fire drills.
“Have a plan to get out,” he said.
The St. George Police Department, city of St. George Utilities and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene for assistance.
