‘Probably the sun’: Drivers sustain minor injuries after T-bone collision in Washington Fields

WASHINGTON — Both vehicles were badly damaged but the drivers sustained only minor injuries after a T-bone collision Wednesday night.

Washington City Police Lt. Kory Klotz told St. George News that a Dodge Caravan traveling westbound on Treasure Valley Road was T-boned by a Kia passenger car after the driver of the Caravan failed to stop at the stop sign.

“Obviously the stop sign is there, just didn’t see it with the sun probably, came through the intersection, failure to stop,” Klotz said, adding that the Kia was traveling northbound on 20 East.

“It came to a head, white car here (Kia) hit the T-bone with the van on the passenger side,” he said. “Pushed the van then to flip over, so you can see damage to both sides.”

“Obviously airbags and seatbelts helped everybody. The cars’ safety features did what they’re supposed to.”

Washington Fire Department personnel cleared the intersection and both vehicles were towed. A Gold Cross Ambulance was on scene but neither driver needed to be transported to the hospital.

“So we’ll issue the driver of the van a citation for failure to stop at a stop sign,” Klotz said.

Klotz said the incident is a good reminder that especially at this time of year, westbound drivers need to be aware of sunlight and glare in the evening.

“If that light’s in your eyes, slow down. Try to be extra cautious,” Klotz said. “Your reaction time is going to be slower with the sun in your eyes. That would be my main takeaway and obviously, on these side streets, just slow down.”
