WOOF! invites community to an adoption party for special needs dog

ST. GEORGE — We’re having an adoption party at WOOF! Center for Active Pets on Saturday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and you’re invited.

One short year ago, a volunteer with Ivins No Kill Animal Supporters (INKAS) approached the Ivins Animal Shelter about INKAS financially underwriting an obedience class for the shelter dogs with a dog trainer from WOOF! Center for Active Pets. The first class was held at the shelter with shelter volunteers and shelter dogs.

One year later, the obedience programs have increased five-fold both in the number of classes and the types of classes. In February 2015, INKAS sponsored 25 Ivins Shelter dog sessions at WOOF!. Now the sessions are personalized & customized to help the Ivins Shelter Dog with whatever he or she specifically needs.

Some dogs need help with socialization (getting along with other dogs) so they get to go to WOOF!’s Fit ‘n Fun sessions. Other dogs benefit with basic one-on-one obedience classes. We’ve worked with new dog parents and their newly adopted dog to facilitate a smooth transition to a home.

One of our favorite dogs, Dudley, benefitted from hydro-therapy, physical therapy, dog socialization, dog obedience and cognitive training. Dudley overcame many obstacles and labels; he’s blind, he’s deaf, he’s dog-aggressive, he’s a special needs dog and won his way into his new adoptive family’s heart. Awwwww! By the way, Dudley is none of the afore-mentioned labels. He’s just a young, cute dog who grew up in a shelter, walks a little crooked and never, ever, gives up.
