Quilted bugs are 3rd Thursday Art Conversation topic

ST. GEORGE  Batik and fiber artist Kay Miner will discuss her art installation “A Bright Swirling of Bugs” currently on display at the St. George Art Museum at the next 3rd Thursday Art Conversation on Thursday, Sept. 17. Beginning at 7 p.m., the accomplished sculptor, seamstress, quilter and educator will share her excitement for nature as the artistic origin of unity and variety in the world.

Miner said:

The inspiration for my current installation goes back to one of my undergraduate design classes. Seeing the magnification of a butterfly wing started me on an exploration of insects and their amazing shapes, unexpected colors, and textures. A chance encounter with the beauty of a simple gingko leaf led me to discover how often shapes repeat themselves in nature. A Ginkgo leaf can mimic the form of a butterfly wing, flower petal, or a fluffy cloud. Therefore it seemed ‘natural’ to combine the detail and pattern of insects with the beauty and simplicity of gingko leaves in an installation format.

Since moving to St. George she has taught sculpture at Dixie State University and works in the costume department at Tuacahn. She is also a docent and vital member of the Education Committee, responsible for facilitating guided tours of museum exhibits to thousands of school children every year.

The Third Thursday Art Conversation is an adult gathering of art lovers interested in more information about the artist and her medium. The art conversation program is free-of-charge.

The St. George Art Museum is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 47 E. 200 North, St. George.
