Valley of Fire topic of Dixie Archaeology Society meeting

ST. GEORGE Dr. Kevin Rafferty, Chair of Human Behavior at the College of Southern Nevada, discusses “An Archaeological Survey in Valley of Fire: Training Students and Deducing a Settlement Pattern Model for Valley of Fire in Southern Nevada.”

The archaeological program at the college has been conducting archaeological survey and site recording in Valley of Fire State park since 2003. This has resulted in the inventory of over 5-square miles of the southern portion and the recording, or re-recording, of nearly 100 archaeological sites in the park. These range in age from the pre-archaic to the 20th century.

The project has exposed over 60 students to the best practices in inventory and recording techniques and has constructed an a model of prehistoric settlement and subsistence in the area.

The Dixie Archaeology Society hosts this free lecture Wednesday, Oct. 12, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Udvar-Hazy Building on the Dixie State Campus 225 S. 700 East Room 121. See more on their Facebook page or at the website: dixierockart.webs.com
