‘Boundless’ at Tuacahn; not your average high school dance concert

ST. GEORGE — As the oldest charter school in Utah, Tuacahn High School for the Performing Arts is dedicated to giving students an experience reflective of the performing arts world they will encounter upon graduation. The dance department is no exception, and Nov. 11, 12 and 14, the department will proudly present “Boundless” in the school’s Hafen Theater.

With the exception of two pieces choreographed by Tuacahn High School’s dance director, Jennifer Dail – including the piece that took second place in the Buckingham Division of the 2016 Utah High School Shakespeare Competition – all of the dances for the fall concert are choreographed by members of the audition-only T.H.S. Dance Company. Dail said:

“This process begins with student choreographers choosing an idea or artistic intention to create their piece around,” Dail said, “(then) finding music that is appropriate to support this idea or intention and creating a movement palette that is motivated and supported by that choreographic intent.”

Once choreographers have their inspiration, music and a basic idea of movement, a formal audition is held with the other members of the dance company. This allows choreographers to choose the dancers that are best suited for the movement and choreographic design.

An eight-week rehearsal block follows, giving choreographers and dancers time to learn, create, experiment and produce a fully realized piece.

Add in the unparalleled support of Tyler Stull, technical theater director at Tuacahn High School, and students in the technical theater academy, and the result is a truly unique production.

“The lighting design gives each piece of choreography texture and depth,” Dail said. “We strive to give audiences a full theatrical experience of dance.”
